History
Having traveled around the world and have been on dozens of military bases I would have to say West Point is the most scenic. West Point is home of the US Army military academy and is located 1 hour north of New York City. West Point borders the Hudson river with million-dollar views of the river. Most people will never be able to get on the base and drive around and explore by yourself unless, you are stationed at West Point, a student, or part of the staff supporting the different areas of the base. The other way is how we got on the base, having an active duty or retired military ID card which allows the card holder access. West Point does have a visitor center and you can arrange for a guided tour.
West Point was opened 1802 and many of the areas are a national landmark and has several historic sites, buildings, and monuments. One of our favorite scenic view is from Trophy Point, which overlooks the Hudson River. Every time we drive through West Point Ana thinks the buildings are castles and Cinderella or Rapunzel live in them. Most of the older buildings are neogothic architectural style, which are large castle like building which are build large blocks of granite. So, Ana is right, they are castles, but I have yet to see Cinderella or Rapunzel in any of the windows.
West Point Today
The part most people at least in the US may know about West Point is the football team. One of the big games every test is the Army vs. Navy game. This year (2021) the game was played at West Point. Being a collage, sports play an important part of the student life, having several different sports to play. To go to school at West Point most of the students need to be nominated by a US Senator, The President or the Vice-President. However, this post is about the scenery, not the sports teams, football, or the students.
The view from the top overlooking the Hudson river is spectacular. But this is not the only place to go. Even the view looking between the two hills from the ground is very nice. The lake across from the football field is picture perfect. In fact, there are so many places to look at, some just of flowers and other overlooking water. Overall, this has to be one of the most scenic military bases around.
